About

Countess turned rebel: Constance Markievicz traded silk for a rifle, emerging as a fearless voice for Irish freedom. By 1916, she’d become a linchpin of the Irish Citizen Army, ready to strike a blow against the British Empire in the audacious Easter Rising. Posted at St Stephen's Green, she helped fortify the park. When the rising collapsed, she faced a court-martial. Sentence: death by firing squad. Because she was a woman, her death sentence was commuted to life. Once freed, she ran for Parliament—and won. Yet she refused to take her seat in Westminster, honoring Sinn Féin's abstentionist policy. In 1919, she was appointed Minister for Labour—one of the first women to hold a cabinet-level post in any European government. A countess who stood with workers and an independent Ireland. 📄 Image Credits All images via Wikimedia Commons:- Constance Markievicz: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Countess_Constance_Markiewicz-1.1.2_%28cropped%29.jpg See links for full license details. 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten stories from history: [Your Channel Link] 💬 What other aristocrat turned revolutionary do you find most inspiring? #ConstanceMarkievicz #RebelCountess #IrishHistory #WomenWarriors #EasterRising #Defiance #SinnFein #FirstMinister #Trailblazer #IrishRepublic
