In 1952, 25-year-old Princess Elizabeth, on a trip to Kenya, learned her father, King George VI, had died. She immediately became Queen, beginning a record-breaking 70-year reign. Elizabeth was not born to be Queen. As the first child of the Duke of York, born in 1926, she was third in line. Her life changed in 1936 when her uncle abdicated, her father became King George VI, and she became heir presumptive at age 10. World War II shaped her early years. At 14, she made her first radio broadcast to evacuated children. At 18, she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, training as a mechanic and driver, the first female royal to serve full-time. Her marriage to Philip Mountbatten in 1947 was a love match that endured 73 years. He renounced his Greek titles, became a British subject, and took the name Philip Mountbatten. Her confidential weekly audiences with the sitting PM were a cornerstone of her role. In 2022, she celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, 70 years on the throne. The only British monarch to reach this milestone. Public celebrations across the UK and Commonwealth honored her unprecedented service. Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle, aged 96. Her 70-year reign witnessed profound social change while maintaining continuity.
