About

In January 1989, George H.W. Bush took office as the 41st president, inheriting a world on the brink of transformation. The Cold War held its breath. But the Soviet Union was changing. Gorbachev's reforms had created a fragile opening. Bush, a WWII veteran and former CIA director, knew the stakes. On a stormy December day in 1989, Bush and Gorbachev met aboard a ship off Malta. They declared a new era of cooperation, effectively ending the Cold War. Just weeks earlier, the Berlin Wall had fallen. Bush's quiet diplomacy avoided provoking Soviet hardliners, allowing a peaceful transformation. In Helsinki, Sep 1990, they tackled Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and paved the way for German reunification, solidifying the new world order. Today, a Berlin monument honors Bush as a 'Father of German Unity' alongside Kohl and Gorbachev. The Cold War ended not with a bang, but a handshake. 📄 Image Credits All images via Wikimedia Commons:- inauguration of George H. W.
