George V

When George V ascended the throne in 1910, he inherited a monarchy under strain. His father, Edward VII, had a relatively short and scandal-touched reign. Public sentiment towards the Crown was shifting in an age of growing democracy. Then came 1914. World War I erupted. George V faced an impossible choice: lead a nation at war while his family name was German: Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Anti-German sentiment raged. Facing intense anti-German sentiment during WWI, George V acted decisively. In July 1917, he renounced all German titles and changed the Royal House's name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor. This rebranding was a pivotal act of political symbolism. The change was more than symbolic. He ordered relatives to anglicize their names. Battenberg became Mountbatten. He visited the front lines and hospitals, sharing the nation's sacrifice. The king was now one with his people. His reign (1910-1936) spanned immense change: WWI, the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, the rise of Labour, and the Great Depression. George V cultivated an image of quiet, constitutional duty, which helped stabilize the monarchy's role in a democratic era. He died in January 1936. His eldest son, Edward VIII, inherited the throne but abdicated before the year's end over his marriage plans. George V's steadfast adherence to duty provided a crucial contrast, helping preserve the monarchy's integrity. 📄 Image Credits All images via Wikimedia Commons:- George V: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:King_George_1923_LCCN2014715558_%28cropped%29.jpg - World War I: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bataille_de_Verdun_1916.jpg - United Kingdom: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Palace_of_Westminster_from_the_dome_on_Methodist_Central_Hall.jpg See links for full license details. 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten stories from history: [Your Channel Link] 💬 If you could ask King George V one question about his reign, what would it be? #history #BritishMonarchy #WWI #RoyalFamily #HouseOfWindsor #KingGeorgeV #BritishHistory #20thCentury #History
