Long before the science fiction author became famous, a different H.G. Wells was already making his mark on the rugby pitch. Herbert Wells was born in Agra, India, on 1 May 1871, and he would go on to pull on the green jersey of Ireland. It would be easy to confuse him with the novelist, but this H.G. Wells earned his place as a rugby union player on Ireland's men's national team. His sporting journey began far from Dublin, in colonial India. The records place him in Ireland's men's national rugby union team, a rare honour for a player born in Agra. Little remains of his international appearances, but the documented fact survives: he wore the green jersey. Herbert Wells died in Hendon on 15 May 1941. His name lingers in rugby archives, usually overshadowed by the literary H.G.
