Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
German writer, artist, natural scientist and politician (1749–1832) (–)
About
Goethe was a young lawyer when he wrote a novel of love and despair that Europe couldn’t ignore. The Sorrows of Young Werther made him a literary sensation in his twenties—banned in some cities, imitated everywhere. Goethe studied law in Leipzig and Strasbourg before the fame, but poetry kept pulling at him. In 1775, a young duke called him to Weimar—not to write, but to help run a duchy. He said yes and became a privy councillor overseeing mines, roads, and finances. He juggles government work and art for a decade. Then, in 1786, he leaves for Italy without telling his colleagues. The trip takes two years and changes how he sees everything—he comes back obsessed with classical proportion and ancient ruins. Back in Weimar, Friedrich Schiller becomes his closest collaborator. Their friendship grounds Weimar Classicism and yields some of the era’s most lasting German poetry and drama. Audiences see plays that blend ancient form with Enlightenment ideas. All while serving the duchy, he pours decades into one work: Faust. The play follows a scholar who bets his soul against Mephistopheles. Goethe completes Part Two shortly before he dies—a literary monument almost sixty years in the making. Goethe is far more than a writer, though. He studies colour, plant morphology, and geology. His Theory of Colours pushes back against Newton’s optics—scientists reject it, but artists and philosophers find something in it. The ripples don’t stop there. His works inspire composers like Beethoven and Schubert, and his name shows up on schools, coins, even a rose cultivar. A global icon out of a small duchy. 📄 Image Credits All images via Wikimedia Commons:- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goethe_%28Stieler_1828%29.jpg - Weimar: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weimar_City_hall.jpg - Rome: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rome_Skyline_%288012016319%29.jpg - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carl_Jager_%281833-1887%29_-_Johann_Wolfgang_von_Goethe_-_R.1900-7.7_-_Colchester_and_Ipswich_Museums_Service.jpg - Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Gymnasium Chemnitz: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goethe-Gymnasium-front.jpg See links for full license details. 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten stories from history: [Your Channel Link] 💬 Goethe was a poet, a scientist, and a statesman—which of those roles do you find most impressive, and why? #LiteraryHistory #WorldLiterature #Goethe #WeimarHistory #18thCentury #ItalianJourney #Classicism #ArtHistory #Schiller #GermanDrama #HistoryLovers #Faust #GermanLiterature #Masterpiece #ScienceHistory #TheoryOfColours #Polymath #Legacy #Culture #Music
