In the late 13th century, a young leader named Osman inherited a small frontier beylik in Anatolia. No one could have predicted that from this modest beginning, one of history’s most enduring empires—the Ottoman Empire—would rise. According to Ottoman chronicles, Osman experienced a prophetic dream: a tree sprouted from his chest, its branches shading the world. Sheikh Edebali, his spiritual guide, interpreted it as a sign of imperial destiny. Soon after, Osman married Edebali’s daughter, forging a crucial alliance. The turning point arrived in 1302 at the Battle of Bapheus. Osman’s forces decisively defeated the Byzantine army. This first major victory shattered imperial control in Bithynia and opened the path for Ottoman expansion into Europe. Osman never lived to see Bursa captured. He died in Söğüt before the city fell to his son Orhan. His remains were later moved to Bursa, which became the first imperial capital of the Ottoman dynasty, ruling for six centuries. From a nomadic chieftain to Ghazi (holy warrior), Osman I laid the foundation of an empire spanning three continents. His legacy reshaped global politics, culture, and trade.
