Philip IV of Spain
King of Spain and Portugal (1605-1665) (–)
About
In 1621, Philip IV ascended the throne of a vast global empire at age 16. His 44-year reign would become a continual struggle against political fragmentation, financial crisis, and military overextension. The empire was financially strained. Philip's reign began during the Eighty Years' War with the Dutch Republic. In 1625, Spain besieged Breda (captured in 1626), a conflict later immortalized by Velázquez, not a singular new war against England. He found an unlikely ally in art. Philip made Diego Velázquez his court painter, creating portraits that projected power even as real power waned. A major rupture came in 1640. Portugal successfully rebelled, ending the 60-year Iberian Union. Catalonia also revolted the same year (the Reapers' War), creating a massive two-front crisis for Philip's government. The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the ongoing Eighty Years' War catastrophically drained Spain. The 1648 Peace of Westphalia (including the Peace of Münster) recognized Dutch independence, marking a decisive shift in European power. The Habsburg dynasty faced a severe succession crisis. While Philip had children from two marriages, only one son, the physically and mentally infirm Charles II, survived him, leading to a major dynastic uncertainty. Philip IV died in 1665, leaving a bankrupt empire and a weak heir. The 'Planet King' had watched his world slowly fall apart. 📄 Image Credits All images via Wikimedia Commons:- Philip IV of Spain: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Philip_IV_of_Spain.jpg - Anglo-Spanish War of 1625–1630: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francisco_de_Zurbar%C3%A1n_014.jpg - Diego Velázquez: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Diego%20Vel%C3%A1zquez%20Autorretrato%2045%20x%2038%20cm%20-%20Colecci%C3%B3n%20Real%20Academia%20de%20Bellas%20Artes%20de%20San%20Carlos%20-%20Museo%20de%20Bellas%20Artes%20de%20Valencia.jpg - Spain: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spain_-_Location_Map_%282013%29_-_ESP_-_UNOCHA.svg - Peace of Münster: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Westfaelischer_Friede_in_Muenster_(Gerard_Terborch_1648).jpg - Maria Theresa of Spain: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Detail_of_Marie_Th%C3%A9r%C3%A8se_d%27Autriche_by_Nocret.jpg See links for full license details. 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten stories from history: [Your Channel Link] 💬 If you could ask Philip IV one question about his reign, what would it be? #history #chronology #SpanishEmpire #Habsburg #ArtHistory #Velázquez #PortugueseRestorationWar #ThirtyYearsWar #PeaceOfWestphalia #HabsburgDynasty #HistoricalLegacy #Monarchy
