William Shakespeare
English playwright and poet (1564–1616) (–)
About
In 1592, a young actor from Stratford was publicly attacked in a London pamphlet. The established playwright called him an 'upstart crow.' This was William Shakespeare's first recorded review. Shakespeare responded not with words, but with work. By 1594, he was a leading member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men. His early plays like 'Romeo and Juliet' captivated London. The crow was learning to soar. Then, in 1596, personal tragedy struck. His only son, Hamnet, died at age 11. Historical records show Shakespeare returned to Stratford. The playwright who would explore grief so deeply had just felt its deepest cut. He channeled that pain into 'Hamlet,' written around 1600. The play asks questions we still wrestle with: grief, madness, revenge. It became his most performed work. From personal loss came universal art. THE REAL TURNING POINT: 1599. Shakespeare's company built the Globe Theatre on London's South Bank. He became a shareholder. For the first time, a playwright owned the means of production. This changed everything. At the Globe, his words reached everyone—from groundlings who paid a penny to nobility in the galleries. He wrote for the people, not just patrons. This democratic access made his work part of England's cultural DNA. In 1609, he published his 154 sonnets. These poems explored love, time, and beauty with intimacy never before seen in English. They were likely written for a private circle, yet became public treasure. Shakespeare retired to Stratford around 1613, a wealthy man. He died three years later on April 23, 1616. Only half his plays were published in his lifetime. The rest survived because fellow actors preserved them. His true monument isn't stone, but language. He gave us over 1,700 words we still use: 'eyeball,' 'lonely,' 'manager.' He shaped how we express love, power, jealousy, and ambition. The upstart crow gave English its wings. 📄 Image Credits All images via Wikimedia Commons:- William Shakespeare: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shakespeare.jpg - Romeo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Romeo_by_Bianchini.JPG - Hamnet Shakespeare: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shakespeare%27s_family_circle_%28Hamnet%29.jpg - Prince Hamlet: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pedro_Am%C3%A9rico_-_Vis%C3%A3o_de_Hamlet.jpg - Anne Hathaway: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AnneHathaway_CUL_Page4DetailB.jpg See links for full license details. 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten stories from history: [Your Channel Link] 💬 If you could ask William Shakespeare one question about his life or work, what would it be? #history #cronologia #Shakespeare #ElizabethanEra #TheatreHistory #HistoricalTruth #FamilyHistory #Hamlet #LiteraryGenius #TheGlobe #BusinessOfArt #PopularCulture #Playwright #Sonnets #Poetry #Legacy #FinalActs #Language #Influence
